I was once assigned, as a rookie sergeant, to supervise one of our legendary untouchables. A guy who did everything in his power to stonewall, dominate or sabotage his supervisors. A man who seemed to work hard to have no friends on the job.

I walked into his module and he immediately stood, turning bright red, staring at me and puffing up. He advanced, but before he could say a word I said, “Walk with me” and turned. He followed, and when we were out of inmate hearing I said, “<Name Redacted>, I hear you’re an asshole.” He started to draw a breath to argue and complain, but I just kept talking: “I assume it’s because you hate people and I totally get that, so here’s the deal. Everything I’ve been able to see for myself, all the documentations says you do a damn good job, and that’s all I want. So the deal is, keep doing a good job and I’ll leave you completely alone. I’m required to check your books once a night, I do it twice a night, but I won’t even say, ‘hi’ to you unless you say hi to me first.

“Further, I’ll do everything in my power to make sure everyone else leaves you alone too. If you need anything from me, you know how to get hold of me, but you’re on your own. That sound cool to you?”

It was more than cool.
